RipRap Security 2024 Impact Report

Introduction

2024 was a transformative year for RipRap Security—not because we simply grew, but because we grew intentionally. Our B Corp certification serves as more than a designation; it's our operational blueprint for creating meaningful impact while building a sustainable business.

This framework guided our decisions throughout 2024, from deepening client relationships to expanding our pro bono commitments. As we reflect on the year, we're proud to share how B Corp principles enabled us to enhance our cyber security mission, strengthen our environmental stewardship, and amplify our social responsibility—all while maintaining the values-driven approach that defines who we are.

Our B Corp Foundation: Second Year Excellence

2024 marked our second year as a certified B Corp. Having earned our certification in 2023, we entered 2024 focused on maintaining our B Corp commitments while scaling our impact. Our human-first approach to cyber security recognizes that this work isn't just about bits and bytes—it's about protecting people, safeguarding data, and ensuring the security of the vulnerable communities our clients serve.

Throughout our second year as a B Corp, we sustained our commitment to serving purpose-driven organizations, with 76% of our paid work supporting underserved and mission-focused clients. We continued investing in our workforce, maintained our environmental accountability, and upheld the governance practices that keep our values at the center of our operations.

Mission Impact Through Cyber Security

Our work in 2024 delivered concrete protection and capacity-building for nonprofits and social enterprises solving hard problems. Each engagement strengthened the nonprofit sector's ability to serve vulnerable populations safely and effectively. What follows is a small sample of the impact we’ve made through our cyber security work.

Comprehensive Application Security: We conducted thorough security assessments of widely used nonprofit software platforms, identifying vulnerabilities that could have exposed sensitive beneficiary data. Our findings helped protect thousands of individuals served by these organizations while building internal security capacity through our coaching approach.

Strategic IT Partnership Development: The team guided a community foundation through a complex transition from a problematic IT provider to one that aligned with their values and mission. This transition secured their technology infrastructure and enabled more effective community service delivery.

Mental Health Data Protection: RipRap developed a comprehensive cyber security framework for a mental health nonprofit, creating robust protections for sensitive client information. This security foundation enabled them to confidently expand services to underserved populations without compromising patient privacy.

Operational Efficiency and Security: We helped a fellow social enterprise enhance both their operational capabilities and security posture through strategic technology investments. These improvements directly supported their ability to scale their community impact while maintaining strong data protection.

Crisis Prevention for Humanitarian Work: When we identified critical vulnerabilities in a nonprofit humanitarian aid org’s technology stack, our rapid response prevented potential exposure of data related to vulnerable populations in high-risk environments. This protection ensured continued safe operations for communities depending on their services.

Incident Response and Recovery: We provided emergency support to multiple nonprofits during security incidents, helping them maintain service continuity for the communities that depend on them. Our response work prevented service disruptions that could have impacted thousands of beneficiaries.

Long-term Capacity Building: Through ongoing security partnerships that include threat detection, staff training, vulnerability management, and strategic guidance, we built lasting cyber security capabilities across our client base. This work enables organizations to focus confidently on their missions while maintaining strong protective measures.

Environmental Stewardship

Our environmental commitments in 2024 reflected our B Corp values and our responsibility to operate sustainably as we grow.

As business members of 1% for the Planet for four consecutive years, we donated 1.24% of our revenue to environmental causes—exceeding the minimum requirement. Our donation amount grew 22% over 2023 and 135% over 2022. We supported organizations including ClearWater Conservancy, NC Warn, B Lab, We Are Neutral, and 1% for the Planet.

We continued measuring our carbon footprint with partner We Are Neutral. In 2024, we generated 3.84 metric tons of CO2 emissions—2.5 times less than 2023, demonstrating our commitment to operational efficiency even as our team and client base expanded. We fully offset these emissions through We Are Neutral's verified offset program, achieving carbon neutrality for the year.

Social Responsibility

Our social impact in 2024 centered on making cyber security accessible to organizations that need it most, while responding to unprecedented security challenges facing the nonprofit sector.

Exceeding Pro Bono Goals: We delivered over 10% of our total working hours as pro bono cyber security work—double our 5% commitment. This included individual consulting sessions with small nonprofits, group training through our Cyber Security Foundations program, and comprehensive security assessments for high-risk nonprofits.

Responding to Political Climate: Our Cyber Security For Good grant program received applications from purpose-driven organizations globally, with a dramatic increase in applications from high-risk nonprofits. The charged political climate surrounding the 2024 election drove organizations serving vulnerable communities—particularly immigrant and refugee rights groups—to seek urgent security support.

Global Reach: We received grant applications from organizations across the United States, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, and Côte d'Ivoire, working in areas including culture and arts, education, environmental sustainability, public health, and LGBTQ+ advocacy. This global response demonstrated the widespread need for accessible cyber security support in the nonprofit sector.

Supporting Our Team's Values: We maintained our employee donation matching program, providing a 5% match on donations to organizations including UNICEF, The Bail Project, American Civil Liberties Union, Doctors Without Borders, and many others aligned with our shared commitment to positive social change.

Reflection

What began as a side project in 2020 has evolved into something profound: a business that proves cyber security and social impact aren't just compatible—they're mutually reinforcing. Our B Corp certification didn't change our mission; it provided the framework to pursue it more intentionally and effectively.

Every client relationship, training session, and pro bono hour in 2024 contributed to a larger vision where mission-driven organizations can focus on solving the world's most pressing problems without fear of cyber threats. When organizations feel secure in their digital infrastructure, they can take bigger risks and reach more people.

Looking toward 2025 and beyond, we see continued threats facing nonprofits working on immigration, LGBTQ+ rights, racial justice, women's health, economic justice, and environmental protection. Our B Corp commitment calls us to be a force for good, supporting these critical causes through cyber security excellence.

Thank you to our clients, partners, and team members who made 2024 such a meaningful year. Together, we're building a more secure foundation for organizations changing the world.
